Almost rescue... but letting nature do her work. On Saturday evening I received a phone call... Cora and Lisa were walking the Retreat road on Eastern Point. They came upon a 14" diameter snapping turtle headed towards Niles Pond. By the time I got there, the turtle was hunkered down in some leaf on the side of the road away from the pond. And, bless their pea-pickin' hearts, they were concerned. Likely a female who had come up on land to lay her eggs, and she was making her way back to water. It was starting to get dark by then, and snappers are diurnal, so I think she was going to sleep where she was and cross the road in the morning. Now, there isn't much traffic on the Retreat road, and people hardly ever hit snappers in the road, especially people who go to Retreats. So... I'm sure she had a safe passage.
